  • Historical romance with some suspense

Underage and at the mercy of her father's cruelty, Lady Emma has nevertheless managed to retain her own character in the face of ongoing abuse. Her rescue from her prison comes from an unexpected source but it brings her the first breath of happiness that she has experienced in her short life. As Lord Harmon's companion in his last years, Emma wins over the love and support of the household staff, but she is not prepared for the promise he makes Lord Drake give on his deathbed to protect Emma after he has gone. Once the estranged family arrives, tensions arise and the plot takes a new direction. This historical romance has strong, interesting characters and the slow build of romance between Lord Drake and Emma brings out their gentle natures and respect for one another. This novel is part of a series and the way is opened for the next book, however it is a standalone and comes to a satisfying conclusion.
