  • Incredible series opener

This was one fantastic way to kick off a new YA fantasy series. It has a little something for everyone. The high-fantasy and epic storytelling of Throne of Glass. The supportive #squadgoals of The Lunar Chronicles. And the tragic backstories of Six of Crows. Largely because of the multiple POV format, by the end it is kind of hard to say there are “main” and “secondary” characters. They’re all an ensemble cast. It’s honestly astonishing to me that this was written by a teenager. Coco Ma’s writing capabilities can outshine even the most experienced of writers. She was born to write. This series will likely become my new obsession. This was my 96th book read in 2019 and it has shot right to the top of my favourites list. A heart-stopping adventure with twists I did not see coming, this book was exceptional.

  • 4 out of 5 - AFCTL

I am in love! This amazing book was written by Coco Ma at age 15(!!!) and she has managed to write a captivating, heart-wrenching and lovable book! And can I just say that it needed to be wayyyy longer to satisfy my needs for this book to just, ya know, never end! Plus the way the epilogue just…. Let’s just say I need the next one! This book had some defining points that I felt really spoke volumes in the story. First thing, was that I love how the love triangle was handled. Although Orion definitely got on my nerves a lot throughout this novel, I am not talking about that right now. I love how there was a love triangle and then it just got sorted out in a completely unpredictable way, but I loved it so much. Now, back to Orion. He reminds me of Edward Cullen - and no, I am not swooning. I am distrubed, he seemed very possessive and jealous, and needed constant power in a situation, which I felt didn’t fit Astrin since she was such a strong and self-assured character. The world was extremely well written, and built. The powers of the characters were just an extension of the characters. I am so glad about this to a point that I cannot explain since I feel that the characters just got that much more vibrant. The other thing that I found with this novel is that I got fanfiction vibes. Now, I am an avid fanfiction reader - especially of my ineffable husbands - and so I can say with absolute conviction that fanfiction vibes are not always trash. Although I do struggle with self-insert ones, or the ones where fifteen year olds are sold to One Direction. They rub me the wrong way. I loved this novel so much, and apart from the creep boyfriend, I loved it! I recommend that you either buy it right now, or just stop existing. Them is the rules.

  • Top Favourite

This is my top favourite book no all. This is an amazing book that a teenager wrote. Can you belive that!? Coco Ma is an amazing writer she brings out all of the deatails when it comes to writing. Coco Ma was BORN to write. When you read this book all of the deatails flow out of the book and it is like what you are reading is right infrount of you. My favourite charaters are Asterin and Quinlan. All of the charaters where beautifuly made. I am very impressed at good Coco Ma can write. If you a little bit of fantasy a little bit of romance and a little bit of fighting than this the book that you should be looking for. I would rate this book a 1000000 but there is only 5. Hope this helped. :) Coco Ma of you are reading this than I follow you on all of the social media that you have. I am also your biggest fan.

  • A Fun Read

This review was first published on Kurt's Frontier. Synopsis: A mysterious demon is terrorizing the kingdom of Axaria. Princess Asterin Faelenhart may be the only one who has the power to stop it. Though she does not yet fully understand her powers, she swears to destroy the demon or die in the attempt. Considering how many trained soldiers failed to return, dying in the attempt is a real possibility. When the princess and her companions set out, powers other than the demon’s maneuver to assassinate her. Webs of deceit begin to untangle, with the trail leading back to themselves. They are left with decisions to make that could unravel everything they accepted as true, including who the real enemy is. Review: Coco Ma has done an excellent bit of world-building. The elemental magic system is intriguing. The common focuses for magic users are affinity stones. My favorite part of the storytelling is the character interactions. Even the demon proves somewhat quirky. Asterin’s magical powers are not limited to one or two elements. She can use all of them and potentially without the use of affinity stones. When reports come in that a demon is destroying villages, the queen sends soldiers out to deal with it. None have ever returned. Asterin takes on the task herself. Once the quest begins, she finds that everything, including the demon himself, is more complicated than she thought. The story slowed in places, but it proved a fun read. I’ve already purchased the sequel.

  • Strong Debut

This is a beautiful book and a terrific lead into what promises to be a thrilling trilogy, and I have no doubt this author will go far in her career. I love the action, the elemental magic, and most of the relationships between the characters, who had distinct personalities. There were some truly great twists that I didn't see coming, and the ending leaves a huge cliffhanger to explore different worlds and realms, as well as develop the characters further. I love elemental magic so it was fun to see this unique take on them, as well as the addition of less common elements. I would love to know more about the demons that live within it. Watching the magic in the action scenes added a layer of suspense and originality to the world. There were so many characters to love and it's hard for me to pick just one. While Asterin was the primary hero, each of the other side characters got some time in the spotlight. I would definitely love to see more of Rose. I think she is a very strong character and would love to see where her story goes. While I did like many of the characters, I did think they had some flaws that kept them from completely adoring them. Asterin could be quite aggressive for no reason, Orion made a stupid decision at the end, and some of Luna's choices felt a bit forced/provided a needless drama. I think that was one of my biggest issues with the book: There would be actions or choices that seemed to bait a little too much for the sequel when they could have been resolved. The banter was so much fun, but it also sounded a little too modern for my tastes. That kind of hindered me from seeing the characters as mature, especially when they are supposed to be powerful and mature. I felt like a few too many things needed to happen for the sake of the plot. Not that I'm saying it's not worth your time. It absolutely is. I see so much potential for this series and author and if you are looking for someone who may be the next big voice in YA, this is an author who needs to be on your radar, especially if you're looking for a fun fantasy read.
