  • Incredibly well written

Just finished reading it. I barely stopped to eat or go to the bathroom. Without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read. The depth of the characters and the overall story is just insane. I want to read more. I NEED to read more of this story. The psychological and logical depth that permeates the whole book is honestly hard to believe to only have come from a single mind. 11/10.

  • Gripping and daring

Having read a few books by youtubers before, my expectations going in was mild to say the least. However, it only took a few minutes to see that this hadn't been crafted in an afternoon. I was hesitant at first because of the sheer amount of exposition and worldbuilding that gets packaged tightly into this book, but it gets communicated in such an interesting way that I didn't even feel the pages go by. Brooks has said before that he had written over a dozen books before finally deciding this one was "good enough", and it shows. What little negatives this book has is greatly outweighed by the gripping characters and tight story. It truly feels as if not one sentence was wasted. Furthermore, the worldbuilding is weaved tightly into the narrative, as the plot pretty much revolves around the principles of darkstone and sunstone and the different quirks of this fantasy world as much as around the characters, which is a breath of fresh air from the trudge of fantasy books where worldbuilding doesn't do much to inform the story as much as weigh it down. This book is heavy with information and technicalities, sure, but it's a kind of heaviness that makes it feel grounded where it would have felt unecessarily dense and messy in the hands of a more impatient/less skilled author. And for that, I have to applaud Mr. Brooks. I also have to point out that this is a book that deals with issues of morality and politics in a fairly daring way, placing moral and systemic failures as much on the individual than on the society they inhabit. It never truly feels moralizing, especially as characters with wildly different points of view often discuss of those subjects on seemingly equal grounds as far as I could tell. The biggest pitfall of this book is that there is no mention of machicolations. Overall, a very entertaining book, a very pleasant experience, and I will definitely be on the lookout for any further works.

  • Shadow of the conqueror

A riveting tale by a first time author. A story of redemption. The story explores concepts of guilt, punishment, forgiveness and it's effect on victims, society, and the accused. How is justice best served? All this set amongst a fantastic fantasy world full of swashbuckling adventure. I was enthralled the moment I started reading. I used every spare minute for three days going through this great read. I am greatly looking forward to the next tale in the Chronicles of Everfall. Shad M. Brooks is a great talent. I hope this is the first of many wonderful adventures from him.

  • Great book

A wonderfully written tale that combines heavy themes with a fascinating setting, complex characters and a delightfully skewed sense of humour.
