  • Booker prize winner 2020

This book took my breath away with its raw and gutsy insight into growing up with an alcoholic mother and how this wee boy survived and flourished through such adversity. What a legend to be so brave and caring surrounded by abject poverty and deprivation in his formative years and beyond. I couldn’t put it down but had many small breaks to absorb and admire the human spirit to survive and finally break feee from the cycle of poverty and all it entails.

  • LOVED IT.

Very descriptive writing. You could hear the Glaswegian accent, you could smell the poverty, you could feel the desperation - you were there every step of the way. Loved it.

  • Brilliant!

An absolutely stunning first novel. It recounts the story of a dark childhood but the narrative is never depressing. A worthy winner of the Booker.
