  • In the spirit of Florence N.

This review was actually meant to be titled "In the spirit of Florence Nightingale" but you are only allowed a certain number of characters in the title... I am in total awe at the determination, courage, compassion and grit of the WWII nurses quoted in this book as representatives of all those who nursed during the war. So many situations and difficulties that just had to be dealt with in the spirit of the times. Some of the experiences recounted are unimaginable today and yet they speak to the fortitude of those women and men who took up a truly noble profession at a time of greatest need. (My understanding of the role of the nurses and sisters in 'Call the Midwife' has increased tremendously because of this book and many of the scenes in WWII historical fiction set in and around hospitals make so much more sense now.)

    Thanks for your feedback!
