  • A perfect KJ Charles caper!

Another twisty, heart-pounding, hilarious KJ Charles caper to add to the books. I’m thrilled to pieces that this is the start of a trilogy, and that we’ll get more of these characters. Give me a lifetime of Will, Kim, Maisie, and Phoebe and I’ll call myself happy. From start to finish, this book is a wild ride. The plot moves at a steady clip, but it’s the twists, turns, and somersaults along the way that really makes your heart race. The characters are charming, layered, and brilliantly flawed. No one writes morally grey characters like KJ Charles — its the reason she’s one of my favorite writers and one of the best romantic suspense writers publishing today. Given the current state of events, I’ve been struggling to focus on reading any new books, but a new KJ Charles never fails to grab me by the lapels and reel me in, hook line and sinker. I can’t wait for the sequel(s), but I’m confident I’ll be rereading this one in the meantime to tide me over.

  • 3-dimension characters and great adventure

This is a great “regular guy caught up in intrigue” romp (like Hitchcock’s North by Northwest but more coherent). Mysterious villains, coded messages, true friends and betrayals…it’s all the best of pulp mystery novels! It also has a lovely and honest-feeling romance. Charles does an especially good job of giving us glimpses inside the characters’ heads – highlighting their loneliness or longing or friendship, without a long, drawn-out inner monologue. There’s a world beyond the words on the page. For those that want a Happily Ever After, know that there’s hope at the end, but the characters are just embarking on their fragile relationship. I want MORE Will and Kim. (And Maisie, too, and Phoebe.) When I realized I just can’t stop thinking about them, and about how they are together, and what lies underneath, is when it became more clear what great storytelling this is. I keep telling myself, IT’S JUST THE FIRST ONE!! It makes me want a time machine forward to the sequel. Definitely recommended. I got an advance copy from the author in exchange for an honest review, and I also purchased the book after publication. Yes, it’s worth it.

  • Absolutely amazing

I love Will! Such a scary man who doesn't even... Think about it? It's such a non existent part of his identity that it took me all book to understand exactly how strong and dangerous he is.
