  • Snow white and the seven samuri

Just a continuous and somewhat disjointed series of reworkings of childhood fairy stories. No plot, no point. Have up reading it as a waste of time.

  • Different but muddled

Really enjoyed but I think the story could have done with a bit more focus. At times it seems that Holt is just throwing new characters and plots at us just because they're available and trying to give them all equal importance and "screen time" if that makes sense (it is a very visual story and storytelling author after all). As it is we constantly move from storyline to storyline without completely engaging with a particular one and (ATTENTION : POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING) towards the end Holt has been having so much fun with the concept that he writes himself into a messy ending with a Deus Ex Machina cop out that feels ultimately unsatisfying. (SPOILER END) In the end it reads a bit like a Jasper Fforde Bookworld novel run riot and without the tightness of script that you need with such a wild concept. Hey, it was a really fun read and I really enjoyed it. If I'm being harsh in putting out the things I didn't like it's because I thought it could have been so much better. Still giving it 4 stars for sheer fun and originality.

    Thanks for your feedback!
