This book is a thriller that takes you to a part of the world you may not have visited - Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. On the way, it wanders through England and Australia and touches on the Highlands of PNG. For those of us who have spent time in PNG, it is a place that has inspired far too little fiction, despite the obvious appeal of the hundreds of cultures. The book also gets the topography and geography right in Bougainville, down to the location of the giant Panguna mine, power plant and port. The book is a product of the ‘70s and views the cultures of the Pacific through a white lens but is, nonetheless fascinating. Of particular note, the book predicts a rebellion in Bougainville that actually happened nearly a decade later than the time it was written. While the circumstances were different and, ultimately far more deadly, the conflict did occur and it lasted more than a decade. Worth a read.
