    Utterley mesmerising

Immediately purchased the sequel. A family that is so unique and yet so familiar. The narratives through the eyes and ears of babies and toddlers is inspired and masterful. So many themes: how the fear of losing a child can fuel religious fervour, for which the antidote is protection of another; war at home and globally; compassion, genetics ... some luck, some author! Nobel prize stuff.

    Farm and families

No author writes about family life with such a sense of intimacy and fine nuance as Jane Smiley. Her rich understanding of farming life whether in medieval Greenland or 20th century USA is incomparable.
