  • Portrayal of life in an oppressive state

A very well-paced book that manages to convey the paranoia that must have existed in the DDR during the latter half of the 20th century. It is a thriller, but it also demonstrates what can happen when the state becomes all powerful. The conclusion also shows the compromises that people have to make to survive in that environment. I found this both engrossing and thought provoking.

  • very authentic fiction

This novel will reawaken some deeply buried memories for any reader who lived in or worked closely with the DDR. A masterful portrayal of a whole state system that was itself a creation of vicious minds.

  • Tense

Enjoyable read, but fairly scary picture of life in old East Germany, not so long ago. Difficult to imagine life under such an authoritarian regime. Although fictional, it gives the reader great sense of dangers of complete state control. Characters and events interesting, albeit at times almost unbelievable. Overall, a good read!

  • A good solid read.

An interesting view of the former East Germany from the perspective of its police and security organisations provided while investigating a murder near the Berlin Wall. It provides a remarkable insight into a society bathed in suspicion and mistrust in which anyone could be an informant.
