  • A nail-biter!

Wow! Don’t start this one in the evening if you want to get any sleep at all! I couldn’t put this one down until I was finished. The tension, suspense and intrigue in this incredible book will grab your attention off the top and not let go until the end. Georgie is a physicist, a career that would certainly leave me in the dust, even though I did well in high school physics. Her brain works in clear lines with everything having an answer that must be found. With this in mind, she doggedly pursues the truth after her husband, Sean, is killed in a hit and run. Too many things just don’t add up. Her tenacity in this search for what is right puts both she and her son in danger. Espionage, treason, Russian spies and murder are just some of the excitement in this page-turner set in the Washington, D.C. area. The author has done a fabulous job of taking us behind the scenes in political circles, in Iraq and Bosnia. Who really is telling the truth and who can she trust with their safety? I thoroughly enjoyed this book, finding myself trying to figure out what horrible thing could possibly happen next and hoping for a happy ending. My nails, however, did not fair so well. I certainly will be watching for more suspense/intrigue from this author! I received a copy of this novel through NetGalley and CelebrateLit. The five star rating is in no way solicited and all comments, impressions and opinions are my own.

  • well rounded characters

This is my first time reading anything by this author and I was not disappointed with this book. It’s fast-paced and drew me in from the get-go refusing to let go till the very end. I enjoyed the plot and the attention to detail. The characters are well rounded and believable along with believable dialogue. A great read and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

  • A suspenseful novel

State of Lies by Siri Mitchell is a political thriller. Our protagonist, Georgia Brennan is a physicist who works on contracts for the government. She is also a wife and mother. Her husband, Sean works for the Department of Defense as a historian. One day, Sean goes out to pick up a part for their leaky faucet and never returns. He was killed in a hit-and-run accident which devastates Georgia. When she realizes Sean told her lie, Georgia begins searching for answers. I thought it contained good writing with twists and surprising revelations. I did feel it was a little bit of a slow starter, but the pace soon picks up as Georgia begins looking into her husband’s death. She begins to hear noises around her home at night. There are some slow sections in the middle with the pace increasing later in the story. The mystery is intriguing with its complexity. It dives into military operations and political figures. Georgia is not sure who she can trust. She wants the truth, but Georgia needs to keep her son safe as well as their beloved dog. There is violence and some gory details. It can be solved depending upon the number of mysteries you have read. While State of Lies if put out by a Christian publisher, it is not a Christian story. I did find the sections on Georgia’s work to be a little dull with their detailed explanations. State of Lies is a suspenseful novel with one woman searching for the truth amid political conspiracies, mistrust, riddles, falsehoods, and espionage.

  • Lies and more lies

State of Lies by Siri Mitchell starts off as a family drama and soon escalates to a mystery. Sean and Georgie Brennan are a happily-married young couple who are parenting their young school-age son. While running an errand, Sean falls victim to a hit-and-run driver and is killed instantly. Life as Georgie knew it changes forever: she is now a single parent to her fatherless son and her job as a quantum physicist is in jeopardy. Her parents offer to help while her father, a four-star general, is about to be appointed secretary of defense. A few month's after Sean's death, Georgie comes into possession of his notebook which details names and codes she is unable to decipher. She then notices that she is being followed and fears that someone wants to kill her and her son. Soon, she can't tell her friends from her enemies. This is an edge-of-your-seat thriller and you won't be able to identify the bad guys from the good. Highly recommended. Thank you to Thomas Mercer and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review

  • State of Lies

State of Lies tells the story of Georgie Brennan who becomes a single mother when her husband is mysteriously killed. She finds that things are beginning to not be what they seem. Her husband leaves clues that she is determined to find out what they mean. She soon to finds out that she herself may be in danger. State of Lies was one unpredictable read for. It was a thrilling, scary, but yet a fun roller coaster ride I did not expect. This story is one that kept me on the edge of my seat. It was full of action, adventure, mystery and suspense. My head was constantly spinning with all of the twists and turns. I am giving State of Lies four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy a well written, suspenseful filled and clean novel. I look forward to more books like this one by Siri Mitchell in the future. I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
