  • A Hitchcockian thriller that doesn't quite thrill.

Two strangers meet on a train. One is a psychopath, Bruno, who wants his father dead and the other, Guy, wants to divorce his unfaithful wife so he can marry his new love. Unfaithful says she is pregnant to her, married, lover and does not want a divorce. Bruno suggests that Guy murders Bruno' father and he will murder Guy's wife. Guy refuses and most of the story is about Bruno's attempts to get Guy to change his mind. I can understand why Alfred Hitchcock made a film based on this book. It if full of suspense and some horror. However, the book is very much of its time and, for me, not very relatable in the 21st Century. Also, while the plot is superb, the writing seems to plod at times and spends to much time on minutiae. I am glad I read it, but will probably not read any other of Highsmith's books.

    Thanks for your feedback!
