  • S brilliant beginning

I love this series for its premise - dragons as flying warships in the Napoleonic age. That notion was interesting enough to get me to buy the book, but the characters and world building is what really sells this book. Novik writes characters who are unique, charming and you can't help but want to get to know them better - particularly Captain Lawrence and Admiral Roland. There are some wonderful touches about the society of the time as well as a wealth of historical details. But the star of the show is undoubtedly Temeraire himself - the dragon is at once naive and brilliant; selfish and self sacrificing; fierce and loving. None of it feels unnatural, and Temeraire and Lawrence's conversations can be as enjoyable as the wonderfully choreographed aerial battles. Over the course of the series, the books lose a little charm, but the first three at least can safely be recommended to anyone as delightful reads.

  • Excdllent

Picture this: the Napoleonic wars, but with an airforce of dragons. Not dumb, snarling beasts of burden, but dragons who are thoughtful and sensitive and basically people too. That's Novik's premise, and it works wonderfully.

  • Fantastic

A marvelous book with a brilliant combination of fantasy en history. The action in the book is great and the concept of dragons is very originally worked out. I just LOVE this book.

  • Great Dragon

Loved the relationship between Temeraire and William. Temeraire is great, so intelligent and full of wisdom but naive in so many ways that is very appealing. The characters are great, even the 'baddies'. The historical nature of the book made me a little wary, but it was well-handled.
