  • Fun, poignant, must read

What a lovely story! I love that the aliens are shades of purple, their hair has a mind of its own, they have 5 genders and signals to indicate to others which genders they have a preference for and commitments to. I think that some of the social issues the author brings up, like communicating about wants and needs before diving into sex or that we make so many assumptions about each other that can cause trouble between us, are great topics to bring up and I wish more authors would get on board writing about such things.

  • Fun, enjoyable, but ...

I enjoyed this story. The main characters were so loving and sweet that I wanted to give them a hug. The world that was built also seemed believable. What I liked least, however, was that the balance of world building to story seemed off. There should have been more story to make the complicated world building feel worth it. Also, it read like a first draft of a novel or a fun writing exercise, especially compared to other books I've read by the author. But what I liked least didn't stop the story from drawing me in. It also wouldn't stop me from reading another story in this series.

  • Enjoyable lighthearted Sci Fi romance snack

A fun little Sci Fi romance romp. It's not too long, easy to read on the go. Please be aware it's not for everyone: if you prefer your m/m romance stories to end at the bedroom door, this might be a bit too explicit for you. If you're looking for a lighthearted, enjoyable Sci Fi mystery with your romance, this is a good read. If you're looking for a bit more depth, you can also read it for the social commentary on issues of gender and sexuality that underlie the story. I enjoyed this as a pleasant interlude of an evening. Would recommend.

  • Simply amazing!

Great story! I would love to read more of it! The universe is so large and complex but so interesting! I loved the use of all the pronouns!

  • Great interspecies love story and great murder mys

Gail Carriger’s writing is always worth a look. In The 5th Gender, Tristol is a lavender alien who has chosen exile from his xenophobic people over a fate he considers worse than death. Detective Hastion is a gruff human who finds himself falling for the alien. A spaceship full of Tristol’s people contacts their space station looking for the services of a detective. They’ve had a murder on board need the help of a human detective. They don’t even have a word for murder let alone the resources to investigate one. Great interspecies love story and great murder mystery. https://lizharkness.com/2019/07/13/books-july/
