In the footsteps of Agatha Christie

A fascinating read whether you are a Christie fan or not. Written in the early 2000s, this book is already a history of places that no longer exist or have changed so dramatically that it is worth reading just for the descriptions: Aleppo, Damascus, Mosul, Baghdad, Ur, and Ninevah as well as the stopover points in his journey through Europe and the Balkans. Initially a journey honouring routes taken and places visited by Agatha Christie, it becomes a travelogue of intercontinental trains, hotels, people and places as they exist now, including a pre war Iraq where the bombs are about to fall and Saddam Hussein is still in total power.
