  • Kids book?

Don't let the fact that this is considered a kid's book turn you away. I've been reading through discworld in order and nearly skipped it for that reason. I'm so glad I didn't. The writer's voice is in line with the rest of the series and there is undoubtedly mature content matter. In fact this is probably the darkest discworld I've read so far by a lot. Also easily my favourite one off yet, if not within my top five discworlds.

  • Coherent, ironic but almost gentle

Agressively violent situations are presented in a way that isn't unnecessarily gratuitous yet is still realistic in that it doesn't diminish the horribleness of it but is a G or PG rating. Take for example the animal fighting ring or horrible ways that traps work. These are horrific situations narrated in the victim's point of view but the author uses humour without making fun. There's a through line in this book that makes it easier to follow compared to some of the author's other stories and I enjoyed the traditional stucture of chapters that he uses for ironic effect.
