  • The Anchoress

Very interesting subject, well written and informative. Did not know such woman existed in the middle ages, it is beyond belief that someone could live as they did. Good story entwined around historical facts with insight into village life in those times.

  • Thought provoking

The review I read about this books was that it would be the next "Burial Rites" - couldn't agree more - a fascinating subject which studies the plight of women in the middle ages in England - Great read but not for those who want a fast pace

  • Another world

This book made me cry and rage. I loved it. Beautiful writing about the lot of medieval women and the strength they found to survive their lives in the midst of inescapable, infuriating injustice. Very cleverly written too.

  • Faith and isolation

A well researched and written fictional account of the daily life of an anchoress in the 13th century. But it's also a highly nuanced account of the stressors experienced by women then and now - work, family, childbirth, misogyny, violence and sexual abuse - and the role that the church has played in forming these stressors throughout history.
