  • A good starting point

These stories are good quick reads that flesh out the main characters of Paul's new series. Strictly speaking these stories are not necessary for the continuity and understanding of the main series, but more information is always better than less. I recommend these books be read, either before, or after, the main novels.

  • Read this before Ashes.

If you are unfamiliar with Paul's work, this prequel novella to the Ashes novel is a good place to start. We are introduced to two new characters, both mages with different backgrounds. The reader will be hooked, by the end you will be reading Ashes straight away. If you have already read Ashes, this will give you a more rounded understanding of these characters and their beginnings. Well worth the read for both reader of Ashes and the new reader.

  • A Prequel to dip your toe in

This is a cute little prequel to introduce us to our two protagonists. It's always nice to know the main characters back story
