I loved this book from beginning to end. Engaging characters and wonderful imagination.

    Richly developed fantasy

A remarkable book with a slightly weak Deus ex machina ending. Its power lies in its extraordinary descriptions and carefully crafted atmosphere.

    The Bedlam Stacks

A very interesting read. I struggled to sort out fact from fiction which made it somewhat confusing. But as I got into it I found the story and the concepts fascinating.

    Gently compelling

This feels very much like her first novel but this is a simpler story and easier to follow; it is even set in the same alternative world/history (a young Keita makes an appearance). There is a gentleness to this and the previous book that seems to be a mark of the author, which means it is not exciting as such, but I did find it compelling.

    Time and man

A fascinating fantasy with roots in historical facts. I did feel that Merrick had a definitely feminine voice which confused me at first, but the story was sufficiently intriguing to overcome that. A good read with interesting characters and insights into British imperialism.
