  • Fantastic Debut Novel!!

The Black Velvet Coat is the story of two women in two different times with a destiny of meeting each other and sharing their stories. Anne is a struggling artist who is in present day San Francisco, dealing with a boyfriend who ends up being married, a job that doesn't pay well and family who wants her back in Michigan. Sylvia Van Dam is a young rich heiress who lost her parents at a young age and has falling for a bad boy who after one night sends Sylvia on this journey on discovering who she really is and what really matters. Anne discovers this black velvet coat in a thrift shop that has a star brooch on the lapel and a brass key in the pocket. As Annie discovers who the coat belongs to Sylvia and the mystery of why she disappeared, fate will bring the both of them together in present day, Sylvia will take Anne under her wing and will leave Anne more than she ever dreamed of in a ending that nobody will see coming. I truly loved this book and the way Jill had both Anne and Sylvia's stories come together in a way that was prefect. I thought the last 50 or so pages was kinda rushed but I still enjoyed it and I could see this having a continuation on Annie's story. For being a debut novel, I'm looking forward to seeing what Jill has for us next!! Thank You to Jill G. Hall for writing a fantastic debut novel that has me wanting more!! I received this book from the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.

  • The black velvet coat

I loved everything about this story. The twists and turns in the storyline kept the reader guessing what was going to happen next and the characters were so believable.

  • Too Contrived for Me

I don't like being critical on writers or any other artists as I appreciate the hard work they put into their craft, but I found the Black Velvet Coat a bit too contrived. The book's premise was interesting and it's what drew me to the story. However, it reads too much like a poorly written for TV romance movie. One of the main characters is just ... dumb ... rather than being innocent.
