  • Simply: The Best SF Stories Ever Written

The whole range of Clarke's ability is on show here in the short form. He can make you weep for a dying ocean, inspire wonder at the immensity of the universe, raise a chuckle with a mad scientist story from the White Hart, and break your heart with the separation of parent and child and parted loves confronted with Einstein's hard laws of relativity. These tales start with his beginner's pieces, and move on to the stories without which modern SF would simply not exist in its current form, The Star, The Nine Billion Names of God, A Meeting With Medusa, The Wall of Darkness, Death and the Senator, The Road to the Sea, The Sentinel, and so, so many others. The classics come thick and fast, and even his lesser known pieces show wit, verve, and always, his clear, lucid prose. Even the earliest pieces often feel as if they were written yesterday, so fresh are they. These are not just the best collected SF short stories from the 20th century, they are some of the best short stories of the century, in and out of genre, full stop.
