  • An exciting page turner from start to end

Set in New York, this is the story of a conman turned lawyer who has to play both roles after his daughter is kidnapped. The chapters are short so you can fit in a wee read whenever you've a quiet moment so it's great for everyone. The first chapter launches straight into the story and it keeps a fast, action packed pace throughout. It could easily fit into the format of an episode of 24!!! It's really hard to put down as every chapter has it's own cliff hanger. For an NYC setting, I don't feel it's an over-the-top, madcap storyline. Just think of the real mob news stories over the decades and the organised crime that still happens today and it's completely believable. You're drawn into Eddie Flynn's character. The author hasn't made Eddie's background a bleeding heart story but you find yourself liking him, gunning for him and desperately hoping he can save his daughter. You really want his life to come good for him. I've read a few reviews commenting about the authenticity of the court room action. This book is fiction, it's a thriller and to meet that brief and keep the reader engrossed, there has to be room for some artistic license. The story needs that wild grasping to keep up the pace of the entire plotline and for me, it helped create that climax to the book that delivered perfectly. So many books give a great story, then let you down with an insipid, anti-climax or vice-versa. The Defence delivered chapter after chapter, first page to last. And I can't wait to hear from Eddie Flynn again!!

  • Brilliant Debut Thriller

It's been a long time since I read a legal thriller, and this is one of the best I've ever read. Eddie Flynn is an absolute joy. The story clips along at a great pace, and the writing style draws you in and keeps you there. Great cast of characters and a story like a roller coaster. This deserves to be huge.

  • Apt title

What a plot! To bring all characters and the story together takes some doing. I take my hat off (again) to this excellent writer!
