  • NOT complete and unabridged

The only complete and unabridged edition is by Robert Latham, Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge from 1970 -1982. He was in charge of the library bequeathed to the college by Pepys, including the manuscripts of the diary. His 7 volume edition of the diary, completed after 30 years of study, is the complete, unexpurgated version. The 19th century editions of the diary are heavily censored, with the passages that the Victorians found unacceptable excised from the account - and there are many. Pepys was an adulterous womaniser, a drinker, took bribes, used earthy, not to say lavatorial language - none of this was printable in Victorian England. The edition that Kobo should be looking to offer is The Shorter Pepys, editied by Latham and William Matthews, Professor of English at UCLA and am expert of 17th C shorthand.

  • A Wonderful Time Traveling Experienc

I keep returning to Mr Pepys's Diary, it is a truly fascinating set of documents that can you can return to many times. I would recommend any lover of the English language to add this to their library.
