  • Fascinating and compelling

This book weaves together the fascinating early history of the OED, with some of the key characters who created it, and a compelling fictional story: a story that is made even more believable because it is threaded through the facts of the dictionary and the Great War. Loved it.

  • Words cannot express...

I really loved "The surgeon of Crowthorpe" and that is why this book interested me. This fictionalized account of the creation of the OED, focuses on the unsung contribution of women.

  • A wonderful read of great intensity.

A marvelous read. Slowly developing intensity until I could not put it down. An education in how language is used to discriminate. Thought provoking in our age of algorithm language design!
