  • Disappeared is good

The problem with reviewing is that all novels require suspension of disbelief, and when you sit down to think through what you want to say, those suspensions come back and haunt you. The first draft of this review went through all the things wrong with the book, and ended up saying “Yes, I definitely recommend you read it!” A lot of it is simple things, like the fact that when they drive somewhere, there is never traffic in the way. One issue is more serious, the fact that Fredrika’s partner is a person of interest in the investigation but all the officers involved somehow separately keep it a secret. I couldn’t quite suspend my disbelief over that one. But that does not spoil a great plot and a skilful unweaving and slow revealing of all the elements involved in it. I really appreciated the way Ohlsson takes almost half the book to reveal the extent of the problem facing the investigators. I like the way that character is revealed gradually and through action – we are shown rather than being told. The writing is excellent. It flows well, it combines description and narrative, movement and dialogue, observation and reflection very well. I have one tiny quibble which does not fit with anything else – the quality of the translation is occasionally poor, particularly with dialogue. It sometimes creates a grating tone which does not fit with the otherwise quite taut writing. Given that slight quibble, I think Ohlsson does very well in creating a believable world. It is, by and large, the world we live in, one in which ordinary life rubs along with its pattern of joys and frictions, but beneath it there is always the possibility of evil. And then, when we are confronted with evil, what do we do? Some of us dissolve, some run away, some run towards it to fight it headlong, some take on the burden of working tirelessly and dispassionately to defeat it. We see them all here. Yes, read this book.

  • The Disappeared

I loved this book . When I started it and saw all the Swedish names I instantly thought ", I'm not going to like it " but once I started it I couldn't put it down! It was written with such knowledge of police procedures throughout. It was a story that captivated the imagination throughout.
