    Underwhelming return

Afraid to say that I didn't get much from this book. As such a fan of his earlier work I was really looking forward to reading this, but now I've finished I feel a bit deflated. Mainly it’s because there's little of the lightness of his earlier books; this is partly because of the period it’s set in (the first world war), but the author has managed to find that lightness in tragedy before. For such a long book, many of the characters feel flat and undefined; I've read that he plans to write more books in this series and may fill them out then, but feel a bit cheated by this book if that's the case. Over all, somewhat of a let down.

    Dust That Falls from Drezns

Great. Loved it. Felt completely involves with the characters so quickly. Harrowing stuff about WW1 but written with a light subtle touch that was strangely effective.
