  • Electric State - Atmospheric and disturbingly beautiful

This relatively short novel by Stålenhag manages to set up a world filled with mystery and atmosphere. I believe it is best read whilst listening to the Electric State playlist on Spotify as this adds to the overall mood which Stålenhags art and writing is trying to create. Details about the setting and characters are slowly unravelled throughout the different artworks and paragraphs of accompanied story. I found the pacing to be just right for it's size, and you feel as though you are on a journey with the protagonist through this dystopic alt-90s America, learning as you go. The story presents subtle commentary on government control, social media, A.I., and the future of brain-linked technology. With products such as Neurolink in development, this story feels relevant. Maybe a warning to the potential dangers of connecting our brains to something that isn't natural. Beautiful art, engaging story, and left me with many post-read musings. Highly recommend to fans of sci-fi dystopia and adventure.

    Thanks for your feedback!
