  • Lovely new installment in a strong series

TL;DR: if you like sassy werewolves and snarky side characters in a lighthearted but emotionally engaging contemporary m/m PNR romp, I'd say go for it :) but maybe start at book 1 (or novella 0.5) to maximise enjoyment if you hadn't already :D This is the third installment in the lovely, sassy, irreverently funny San Andreas Shifers series by Carriger. Again we are presented by a veritable buffet of lovely hunky werewolves, snarky assorted shifter and non-shifer-packmates, and the wide rainbow that is San Francisco's Bay Area. The Romance is lovely, but it's all the side plots and the side characters that really make this series stand out for me. For those who know and appreciate her other works (as Gail Carriger rather than G.L. Carriger, because the G.L. books are a lot more explicit than those written under the Gail name) this story again provides lots of little hints and clues to other characters you know. For those who do not, don't worry, the story works fine on its own (though knowledge of the first 2.5 books in this San Andreas Shifters series really does help and I would definitely recommend beginning at the start of the series - the first installment is a novella, hence the .5). I really enjoyed this novel and read it basically in one sitting. Colin is a lovely character, sweet but possessing a quiet strength that he didn't know he had. Judd comes across as less accessible perhaps, though that is in line with his character and role, so I suppose that works out. This installment seemed to me to be less steamy in the romance part and more sweet; less explicit scenes between the main characters once the romance got underway. I was absolutely fine with that, but mileage may vary. If you're looking for some really awesome world building to go with your PNR m/m Romance, this is a series for you. There is in all these books a decent portion of plot beyond the Romance, which is the way I like it, but again, mileage may vary. If, like me, you're fine with all sides of LHGBTQ+ Romance and appreciate the fun of having some seriously solid PNR world building spanning from (mostly) Steampunk Victorian to the present day, have a look at all of Gail Carriger's work if you hadn't done so already. If you just want to enjoy this as is without the backstory as a contemporary m/m PNR series, that also definitely works :)

  • Always good

Whoop, just whoop. Go read, Gail as always has provided and fluffy, steamy, fun read that I finished far too quickly.

  • Fun addition to the series

This is the 3rd San Andreas Shifter book, and while not necessary it is probably better to have read the others first. Colin and Judd are 2 pack members that have been circling around each other for a whole, and in this story they finally get their happily ever after. I enjoyed learning more of the characters back stories as well as seeing how they get together.

  • Love this series!

I adore GC's books, no matter the universe/period. She has beautiful main characters that you can understand and relate to and the side characters are just as brilliant - I always have a smile on my face when finishing one of her books. This one is no exception as I could relate to Colin a great deal - invisible but always helpful and making sure the people you care about are always taken care of. Can I move into this universe? Would love to meet Trick and the rest of the pack lol. Anxious to read the next one!

  • Spicy, salty and fabulous!

As always, Ms. Carriger treats her characters with kid gloves, vast quantities of humor and a large dollops of style and danger. The plots always have a few twists and turns, and always for the best by the end. Her writing is saucy, irreverent, tender at times, yet always leaves you feeling satisfied and warm-hearted at the end. This book is no exception, and the contrasts between the two leads are a large part of its appeal. Even though the style of writing is of a Japanese genre I am not very familiar with, I certainly saw the elements when I researched it a bit. Regardless of of genre stereotypes, the book was still clearly one of Ms. Carriger’s books, as her own writings, whether steampunk, outer space or shifter, have elements that are present that make them so very enjoyable for me to read! Two thumbs up, many kudos, five stars and she’s done what she does best yet again! Thanks for writing the way you do and so often!
