  • Excellent

I really enjoyed this one! This is a new to me author and I must say I really enjoyed her writing style and her fresh take on the familiar marriage of convenience trope. The characters are well developed and the story has a nice easy flow to it. Overall a very enjoyable read and one I definitely recommend. When Clark Wainwright agreed to do a favor for his sister, he never imagined he'd end up wearing tights, dressed as a superhero, and punching the birthday boy's dad square in the nose. While that was a very satisfying incident it also opened up a world of trouble for the little guys mom, Anna Bishop. Now he's come up with a way to fix the problem if he can just convince this woman he just met to marry him!

  • Surprisingly excellent read!

Anna Bishop was utterly distraught when, half an hour before her son Louie’s birthday party, the superhero guest of honour Redhawk had not shown. To make matters worse, Anna’s ex-husband George shows up, and starts acting up, and that’s when Redhawk appears and decks George. Clark Wainwright’s sister Taylor is Anna’s best friend, and when she told him of Anna’s plight, Clark rushed to the rescue; Clark knows how it feels to have a birthday party ruined. Unfortunately in a way, Clark ruins the party for Anna, as George threatens to sue and take Louie away from her for good. Anna had been a fan of Redhawk growing up, and she is rather impressed to see the faux superhero; Taylor had been trying to set up Anna and Clark for ages, but it had never come to be, and now Anna regrets it, and so does Clark. When I read the blurb for THE FAVOR, I thought it looked light and fun, and it is, however there are some more serious undertones, when we learn about Anna’s and Clark’s personal stories. Clark cannot stomach how George behaves, and concocts a plan to help Anna and Louie, I did not quite expect it, but it was a logical solution according to Clark’s reasoning. Blaire Edens skilfully depicts life in a small town, and I liked that Anna and Clark feel like ordinary people; even George, who is a big fish in a small pond, is a believable character. While Anna and Clark’s initial attraction is undeniable, a relationship is not on the radar for neither of them, and they are somewhat taken by surprise when it happens, and it felt real. At times, some actions felt a bit overdrawn, mostly regarding Clark’s and Anna’s inability to come to terms with their past, but it worked in the grand scheme of things. Ms. Edens’ prose is unpretentious, yet every element comes across clearly, which is entirely well-suited to the small town. I liked all the characters, and Clark – in spite of his shortcomings – is a great guy, Anna is very relatable and a great mom to sweet little Louie, whom I really liked; not too cute, just enough. THE FAVOR is an amazingly quick read, I thought the notion of the superhero was a fantastic idea, as it has quite a bit to do with the whole story in a way, and this is rare: THE FAVOR’s ending is exceptionally well executed, so much so that it actually raised my rating! Well done, Ms. Edens! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. This review is also featured On Straight Shootin Book Reviews. I give 4 ½ stars
