    Tasteful Retelling

The Forbidden Wish is a retelling of Disney's Aladdin, but with a rather large twist. Jessica Khoury did a wonderful job of staying true to the character of Aladdin himself, as well as the world. However, Khoury took what had been laid before her by her predecessors and made it truly her own. The world expanded tenfold, allowing a richer world to be established in ways not previously shown- much like the minute alleys and ends shot from the original 1992 film. Now, to continuously compare this novel to the Disney companion would be wrong, as it is its own story, in its own right. The Forbidden Wish hooked me from the very beginning as you do not follow Aladdin, but the redesigned Jinnie- and her story is one so enveloping, that you can't help but read it. The story itself is one of wishes, but also questions. What is the difference between a monster and a magical being? What does Zahra wish to be? Who would she become if given the choice? And how do Aladdin's wishes change her own? Khoury teaches the lessons of a lying liaison, a master manipulator, and a traitor, but most importantly- a lover. For, although this book hovers on the edge of destruction, it holds so much more. Zahra is known as a betrayer, as a destruct-or, as one who-gives-the-stars-away- but why? Because she chose love. The Forbidden Wish will teach you not only about a lively, dangerous world, but also about the cost of love, and those who will try to take it away.
