  • American Classic Historical Fiction

1921. Elsa Wolcott survives a childhood illness, her parents shut her away in her room, and she spends her time reading and daydreaming. She feels like an outsider in her own family, unloved and unwanted. When a younger man shows her some attention, she’s delighted, doesn’t think about any consequences and how her parents will react? 1934. Elsa Martinelli lives with her two children Loreda and Anthony on her parents-in-laws farm in Texas. Her no good husband Rafe left her, the children and his parents Tony and Rose are devastated. The once flourishing wheat farm is dying, due to no rain, all the crops fail and slowly the life is being sucked out of everything on the farm. The Martinelli family are in big trouble, the animals start dying, with no summer produce to put up, the root cellar is almost empty and what will they do? Millions of people are out of work, America is on its knees and it’s called the Great Depression. The drought is so bad and it hasn’t rained in years and this causes another problem, with no vegetation to hold the top soil down, it’s blown away, huge storms of dust roll over the plains and they called it the American Dust Bowl. With frequent dust storms, children start suffering from dust pneumonia, its damaging their young lungs and it can be fatal. When Ant comes down with the disease Elsa has to make the difficult choice, stay on the farm or leave for California? Elsa Martinelli begins the long road trip to California, it’s a nightmare, dangerous on and off the road. When she finally arrives it’s not at all what’s she’s expecting, she has to work incredibly hard and long hours to feed her children and Elsa's extremely angry about the way she and other people are being forced to live. The Four Winds is an epic American story, about a terrible time in the nation’s history and one woman’s brave fight to look after her children and her selflessness, her determination and her amazing spirit. Kristin Hannah has written a new American classic novel, it takes you on an emotional journey and five stars from me.

  • Appropriate for the era

Here is a woman who was told and believed she was a nothing; of no account. Bravery and a courage to stand up for what you believe make for an impressive tale.
