  • Emperor gates of rome

Loved the way you can follow the whole saga from beginning to end .had to read whole series couldn't put them down. Had enough historical facts to make it believable but enough story telling and imagination to breath new life into a well known and well documented subject.

  • Early into historical novels

Well. this is my third historical and after the hard work getting through the first two Ghengis etc this was a joy.I am fond of Roman history and this has a nice way to explain what could happen . Roll on book 2.

  • Awful book

I bought this book beacause I really enjoyed Conn Iggulden's series of novels about the Wars of the Roses. Also, knowing a bit about the life & times of Julius Caesar, I thought I'd give this a go. It was very disappointing: not well written, but mainly the historical innacuracies. Maruis was not Caesar's maternal uncle, but was married to Caesar's father's sister, Julia. Aurelia, Caesar's mother, is portrayed as mad. This is not true, as she lived to be 66, lived with Caesar for many years & brought up his daughter Julia after the death of her mother. Many other innacuracies, which really annoyed me. The story line was also weak. As for Caesar's friend Marcus, he turns out to be somebody who was , in fact, 15 years younger than Caesar & of noble birth & not the son of a harlot, as in this book. Needless to say, I shall not be reading any more in this series!
