  • A Heartfelt Romance

It seems there is a fine line between romance and erotica these days which is why I tend to avoid both genres. However, I took a chance with this based on the description and it's a decision that I do not regret at all. Set in a time period where this kind of love is not only forbidden but could have you jailed and worse, two lonely hearts (one of which terribly broken) find each other by happenstance. The turmoil felt by the characters in this story is not unfamiliar, but rather, all too familiar for many and finally getting passed the blocks that we all put up is, perhaps, one of the more difficult things we can face. This story tells of these struggles beautifully. I couldn't have asked for a more touching story at a time when it felt needed.

  • The gentlemen lamp lighter.

Love how social status means nothing. Easy reading. Hard to put down. Set in a period not many people have experience.

  • Charming and Romantic

I was charmed by Summer Devon’s The Gentleman and the Lamplighter when I read it back in 2015 so when the opportunity arose to review it as an audiobook I didn’t have to think twice. Ms. Devon does a wonderful job depicting both the historic period and the differences between the social class of both men. John’s descriptions of his job as a lamplighter are lovely and truly capture the ambiance of the moment, and when he walks his route with Giles the two men make a compelling connection. The friendship quickly turns into attraction and it’s easy to see these two are perfect for each other. The sweet and romantic sensations of this novel are enhanced by the melodic and gentle tones of narrator, Mark James. He does an excellent job with the various voices, and I especially enjoyed the lively banter between the bookshop owner and his wife. He’s a good match for this one, and it was easy to enjoy this story a second time. The Gentleman and the Lamplighter is a true romance, guaranteed to warm your heart and make you smile.

  • Great story, fantastic narration!

Audiobook review Overall 5 Performance 5 Story 5 Great story, fantastic narration! The Gentleman and the Lamplighter is a wonderful short story about two young men from very different classes finding each other. Both of them have lost someone close to them. The blurb is fantastic so give it a read. This is the first book I've read by Summer Devon but I have several others in both my ebook and audiobook libraries. I need to move them up higher on my TBR list. 😊 I could feel the emotions in the writing and in the fantastic narration by Mark James. After listening to this I tried very hard to find other audiobooks performed by him and was unable to find any. If this is indeed his first audiobook, what a fantastic way to begin. I can be pretty critical of narrators. I've listened to a number of them, both male and female, where the phrasing and vocal inflections for the text being read were off, and therefore distracting to me as a listener. There was none of that in this book. I could see myself listening to this one again when I need something short and soothing to listen to. Listening to The Gentleman and the Lamplighter was absolutely a great way to spend a couple of hours. A review copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
