    Thought provoking

I did not expect this book to go where it did. For me it started off a little like 'Divergent', but soon went to a far darker place in my opinion. This book makes you think for yourself what makes us human.

    A must read

Jonas is approaching his twelfth birthday, an important age because that is when all the members of his community are assigned their future roles based on their interests and aptitudes. The world Jonas is living in is calm and well ordered, precision of speech and rule following is valued, daily rituals are observed and everyone knows what is expected of them. When Jonas is assigned the role of Receiver, he is completely unaware of what this will mean. The Giver will transfer all the accumulated memories of people over to him, so that his will be the wise voice that the community can consult when they have a dilemma. As the relationship between the Giver and Receiver progresses, we see a shift in Jonas, he begins to realise just what sacrifices have been made to maintain this perfectly ordered world and ultimately learns to love
