  • Memorable characters

Enright took me right into the centre of this contemporary Irish family, devoting separate chapters to each sibling and their mother before bringing them together at Christmas for the climax which was not all the cliche that could be expected. She has a commanding breadth of insight into her characters that is often surprising but her fluency and metaphors are just as expected from my enjoyment of her earlier novels.

  • Excellent story, very believable characters

You really have to pay attention while reading this book so you can join the dots of the plot, but Enright's characterisations of individual family members and of the family as a unit are absolutely excellent and hold the book together over its 3 continents and 30 year timeframe. Would recommend.
