  • The Haunting of Hill House

Second time I've read this great book and enjoyed it more on the second reading. Stephen King also lauds Shirley Jackson and I can clearly see her influence on his writing. Five stars.

  • Haunted and Mad

I came across this book quite by chance. It is neo-gothic, having been writren in the 1960 's. The storyline isn't particularly unique. A professor rents a supposedly haunted house to engage in an observational study of paranormal activity. He recruits two young women and a young man (who is required to attend by the owner). There are elements of stickiness and suspense. However, the underlying drama is the rapid decline of one of the girls to madness. Although this is a fairly enjoyable read, it lacks real depth. The major episodes are too brief and lack conviction. I think the plot really could have been deeper and richer. The characters were nicely developed but they have potential that was never developed. The author was quite popular at the time she was writing. Unfortunately, she died in the 1969's at age 48 in her sleep.
