  • Parker 1

Not bad for an older their and mobster novel. This was the basis for Mel Gibson's Payback movie. This was a good quick read that was a page turner. I'll read more of these in the future.

  • In the beginning...

Its pretty straightforward compared to later, more developed Parker novels but it all had to start somewhere. Not a lot of flesh on Parkers bones yet but its still a very good read.

  • Much fun if you like hard-boiled Pulp

Parker is a tough guy. His amorality is what distinguishes him from Spillane's Mike Hammer. His sadistic and bull-headed approach to problem solving is what distinguishes him from Mike Knowles' Wilson. By the way Knowles cites this book as what kick-started his own writing.

  • Not a funny guy

If these things were not so grim they would be funny, but Parker is not Dortmunder.

  • Hard hitting

I don't usually read crime novels but I seen the modern film (Payback) and wanted to read this. The book has a simpler story line but it's fast moving and has no need for useless filler. I enjoyed it and read it quickly. Will look into continuing the series.
