  • Believable characters you can root for

I loved this book. I identified with Caro HARD. There were so many pressures she was under - the unwillingness to admit her mistake with Robert that led her to sanctify his memory far more than he deserved; the sense of duty to keep an open hand with her friends so as not to seem selfish; the pressure to keep a good appearance once she had money that led her to spend on wardrobe and decoration. They all seemed so realistic to me and I was glad Neville wrote a character who was flawed that I could root for. I also adored the sides we saw in Thomas - the desire to be proper as well as a certain amount of curiosity as to what else there was out there. He could have been one-dimensional and he wasn't; he had his own complex past and his secret burdens. I liked the way they were both attracted to each other and the tension of their attraction vs. what they should do. And I appreciated that their first time in bed was NOT perfection, and the way the physical part of their relationship evolved. I also liked that Caro was an experienced woman who knew what she wanted. I loved the secondary characters Neville built up through the novel. They all had their own goals and their own personalities and were unique and believable.

    Thanks for your feedback!
