  • Intriguing and thoroughly enjoyable read!

What a refreshingly different, intriguing and thoroughly enjoyable read! Ms Johansen’s creative and descriptive writing brought the Tearling and its characters to life. She planted vivid images in my mind of the rich landscapes and I became involved in lives of the many colourful, unforgettable characters: Kelsea, Pen, Mace, Lily and Father Tyler to name a few favourites. I loved how the author is not afraid to show the character’s weaknesses as well as their strengths. She portrays Kelsea as intelligent and strong, yet with the immaturity and impulsiveness of the 19 year old that she is, though she does mature in this book. Kelsea has to deal with the desires and wishes of being a young woman with the responsibility and pressures of being a queen. I loved the close relationship that develops between Kelsea and her personal guards and the conflict that they feel between being sworn, obedient protectors and men with opinions and feelings. I was a little confused at first when Lily suddenly appeared in the storyline, but as the tale unfolded, the connection between Lily and Kelsea became obvious. It added a new, engrossing dimension to the story and cleverly entwined the past with the present. I loved learning about Tearling’s rich history and discovering the secret pasts of some of the characters. Ms Johansen revealed just enough to keep me satisfied yet there are enough unknowns to keep me intrigued and guessing The story is dark, sometimes violent and covers serious issues such as rape and torture, and therefore not recommended for younger readers. I am loving this series so far and cannot wait for the next book to come out.

  • Tearific 2

A gripping and well written story about what drives the battle between good and evil in people. The power and the pain of the human conscience to make choices is told in a riveting story of a reality that alternates between two times and two worlds. I look forward to the final book.

  • Engaging and satisfying continuation of the story of the Tearling

If you are considering this book you will have read the "Queen of the Tearling". This is a worthy follow on from that, with the same page turning draw. The Idea behind the Tearling is interesting, looking both forwards and backwards in our history. I can't say that it's vision of how a new world might look is convincing, but it is interesting.
