  • Very good

Very good story. Some well developed villains, relatable main protagonists and satisfying ending. And some real, unforeseen surprises throughout the story.

  • You will fall in love with the Sycamore Dorning!

When Jeanette, Marchioness of Tavistock, approaches Sycamore Dorning with a most unusual request, he immediately sees past her immediate need to comprehend that she has bigger problems plaguing her. But, Jeanette, who lived through marriage at 17 to a cruel and heartless man, is unwilling to trust Sycamore beyond that one issue. As a gentleman and the youngest of the Dorning siblings, he is used to being overseen and interfered with by all and sundry, and wants to protect Jeanette at all costs. Getting her to accept that help, and, ultimately, his love, are the challenge. Ms. Burrowes can be counted on to weave a story around fully fleshed out characters, who act in a manner appropriate for the era, and speak in a way that won’t jar the reader out of the time frame the story comfortably inhabits. In addition, the language and word choice of Ms. Burrowes is so beautifully creative that I find myself rereading passages simply to enjoy the ride! This is a standalone, but I highly recommend ordering all of the True Gentlemen series because you will fall in love with the Dornings, as I did. This book was provided by the author without any requirement for a review, positive or otherwise. All opinions are 100% my own.

  • I think Grace Burrowes saved the best for last

I love this book, as Sycamore and Jeanette are both such interesting, intelligent characters. Sycamore is the youngest of six brothers, and the last brother to get his book. The family is very poor when Casriel, the first brother, appears in book 3, but each brother has found success by using his natural talents. Sycamore and his brother Ash, for example, were really good at playing cards and calculating odds. They used their talents to open an upscale gambling establishment that is very popular and has made them financially secure. Jeannette is blessedly widowed after a miserable marriage but is feeling uneasy about her safety. She comes to see Sycamore at his club, with an unusual request for a lady - she wants him to teach her how to defend herself. Jeannette's marriage was so miserable that she has difficulty trusting any man so this is a big step for her. This book has an entertaining and twisty plot that introduces some new characters I hope to see more of. I highly recommend this whole series (actually, all of the series). One of my favorite things about Grace Burrowes' books is how her characters are likely to be mentioned or appear in other books. While I received an ARC from the author, I also preordered my own copy. It was a pleasure to read and review this book.

  • Another Dorning triumph

Loved the series and the family. Each sibling moves into your heart. I'm happy to see that Orion won't be left out with the new series.
