  • Great crime read

I haven’t read any of this authors books before and I found this one a bit slow to get into at the start. This changed about a third into the book and from there, I was hooked. The main character, Amanda Steele, is well written and her personal pain is heartbreakingly real. The police procedures and processes are very detailed and I liked that about this book as you really felt you were along for the ride too in regards to solving the case. I was surprised at a late twist and found the overall story to be really very good. I am keen to read the next story for this character. If you are after a gripping crime read then this is one for you.

  • Smart, Unexpected Twists!

The Little Grave is book one in Carolyn Arnold’s new Detective Amanda Steele series. Prince William County Police Department Homicide Detective, Amanda Steele, is trying to live up to the lofty reputation built by her former police chief father, while dealing with the aftermath of a tragic accident that took the lives of her husband and daughter. Her latest murder case is only adding to her stress. She’s promised herself to work the case to its end, but will it end her before she ends it? This is a good start to the series. Amanda, the female protagonist, is a good, complex, if not completely likable character. The story starts slowly but picks up the pace about halfway through and builds steadily till the climatic end. The plot was strong and interesting, even with the slow start. Ms. Arnold introduces some smart, unexpected twists that will keep you guessing. Overall, I enjoyed this novel and will read future installments. I rate The Little Grave 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

  • A gritty, fast-paced crime thriller!

Carolyn Arnold has brought on quite the start to her latest, thoroughly addicting crime thriller, "The Little Grave." Once it gets started, it doesn't let up until the end. It's a gritty, fast-paced police procedural, and book one of the Detective Amanda Steele Series! Five and a half years after the tragic death of her husband and six-year-old daughter, due to the carelessness of a drunk driver, Detective Amanda Steele is face to face with the remains of their killer. Instead of stepping down due to the apparent conflict of interest, Amanda decides to push forward, hoping that she'll gain some closure by working on this case. What she ends up discovering goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined. I was immediately hooked; talk about an ominous first chapter. Author Carolyn Arnold has masterfully executed this book in a way that made me feel things down deep for Detective Amanda Steele. Thankfully I've never had to go through the suffering she has; Arnold's writing made her come alive - I felt so much pain and sorrow for Amanda, my heart breaking at every mention of her lost daughter and husband. While some books may spend a little too much time sinking their claws into the reader with a main character's back story, The Little Grave was right on point. The central murder case directly related to Amanda's past, making her history and the dark recesses of her mind all the more relevant. Factor in a couple of additional murders, as well as a twistedly dark subplot, and we've got a story that skillfully ties everything together while still managing to surprise! I look forward to reading the next installment in this series. I enjoyed the growing partnership between Amanda and Trent, Amanda's reconnection with her family, and the budding romance between Amanda and her new connection. This is another Bookouture book that I would hands down recommend to all of my crime thriller fans. Many thanks to NetGalley, the author Carolyn Arnold, and the publishers at Bookouture for my advanced copy of this ebook. I have honestly and voluntarily reviewed this title.

  • Terrific crime thriller

INTENSEFUL, lots of intrigue in this police procedural crime thriller. Amanda, the lead detective has suffered a personal devastating tragedy which in turn influences her view of life & her detective skills. Great characterization & storyline keeps you guessing until the terrific conclusion. First time reading this author but will definitely look for #2 in this series. RECOMMEND highly! Thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for this ARC in return for my honest review.
