  • Slow Building

This was a very intense psychological thriller. It had many twists and turns and kept me guessing. I wish the ending had been a little less mysterious and had more closure. My reason for not giving it a higher rating was the beginning. This book took me so long to get into, very slow paced at first. It did pick up mid way through and then it was hard to put down. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

  • “The Man I Married

The Man I Married is a roller coaster psychological thriller that will excite you, frighten you and have you turning the pages well into the night. The story starts gently, but gradually builds into an absolutely gripping tale of treachery and deceit. Elena Wilkes has the ability to draw you in so that you are not just reading a story you are actually there in the middle of it. I needed to know what happens who was telling the truth, who could be trusted. This was an outstanding tale and although I finished the book yesterday I am still haunted by it. Totally worthy of a 5 star rating.

  • Happy to Say the Blurb is Right!

"A gripping, dark psychological thriller with an absolutely nail biting ending that will keep you hooked" Well in this case the blurb was correct. This was my kind of thriller even though parts of it are far-fetched. Secrets, lies, twists, who's crazy and who isn't, a missing child...all the elements that are enjoyable to me in a novel. The Man I Married was a very twisty and quick read that I read in an evening and I enjoyed it very much. It had such a fast pace and the writing captured my attention and didn't let go. I usually try to puzzle out and think about how realistic things are as I can't suspend disbelief very easily, BUT I like what the author did here...So I was caught up in Lucy and Paul's story. This was such a fun romp and a great debut, I'd definitely read more by this author. I do have a little niggle though, these are a couple of excerpts from the book... What happened, what didn’t happen, lies, truth, all re-invented, re-told, re-packaged. Whoever knows, really? Black becomes white and then becomes black again Otherwise you’ll say I never said it, or mishear me, or some other nonsense. If my man was saying/doing this all I would see is red flags...So Four Stars Instead of Five.

  • The man I married.

After the first chapter I knew that I was going to like this book. Lucy's verbal exchange with a sex offender was illuminating, albeit a little scary. It then spent a little while setting the scene, but following that it just took off. This was a book I just couldn't put down. every time a question was answered a few more appeared. Don't skip the prologue, hold that information with you until the end. I absolutely loved this tale and look forward to Elena's next release.

  • A great debut

There is nothing better than a wickedly dark psychological thriller and The Man I Married fits the bill perfectly. It will have you questioning everything and most likely scrutinising your own relationship before taking the plunge! It is an intense read with some really good twists and turns to spice things up. Elena Wilkes has crafted a story that really gets under your skin. In a genre that is saturated with this type of story, I really enjoyed Elena Wilkes take on it. The mystery surrounding Paul and his previous relationship, does make it stand out above others and brings with it a point of difference. The characters are well rounded and developed and although I was not really a fan of any of them, they have been well written and evoke many emotions within you. They are also very believable and this for me is more important than whether I was able to connect with them. The Man I Married is a slow burn to begin with as everything is laid out, but it still had me glued to the pages desperately wanting to know how it was all going to unfold. The second half picks up the pace and has you flicking the pages a lot quicker and this is when it really gets the heart racing! As a debut novel, I think Elena Wilkes has done a great job with this story. It has been very well researched, plotted and although there are a couple of loose ends that are not tied up, still makes this a compelling and enjoyable read. Elena Wilkes is one to watch in the psychological thriller genre and I will definitely be on the lookout for more books from her in the future. Thank you to NetGalley, Hera and Elena Wilkes for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The Man I Married which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
