  • Summer Romance Read

I cringed, I laughed, I blushed, I swooned and all in one book. I definitely enjoyed reading the new guys, good to see that the women can also be the boss in a romantic comedy. I absolutely love Ryan as a character and all his traits even the frustrating ones, and Sam was good, sometimes a little flip/flop for me, but Ryan kept me turning the pages. A fun read, an enjoyable read and a book that I would recommend to friends who wanted a light hearted read. Thankyou for me ARC NetGalley & Harper Collins

  • A fun, funny, smart romance

Sam Huxton is not a one-night stand type of woman, but she's having a horrible day, and she needs a distraction. Shes' drowning her sorrows in a pub when she decides to take a walk on the wild side with a hot, brooding grump in a leather jacket. Their chemistry is off the charts, but they agree to one night, no names, no numbers. But things go awry the next day when the new guys turns out to be Sam's new employee. Ryan is the programmer that she hopes is going to rescue her new app launch, and she has a strict no-mixing-business-with-pleasure rule after things went very badly with her ex.. Ryan is off-limits. But with their blazing chemistry, how long can that really last? On paper, it seems Sam and Ryan are polar opposites. Sunshine to his gloom, Sam eventually pulls Ryan out of his shell and he opens his heart and soul to her. All in all, this is a fun, smart and sweet romance.

  • A role-reversal twist on the traditional office ro

A 3.5-star story for me (I really wish we could award half stars so there’s more definition!). We have a good premise for a reversal twist on the traditional alpha-male CEO/smart/sexy/nerdy/awesome worker bee who turns everything upside down. Our heroine, Sam, is our CEO. Reeling from a horrible personal loss (grandfather’s death), she goes off the rails in the form of a wild one-night stand with the stranger sitting next to her at a bar. A good setup, our hero Ryan goes with the flow, and he’s got some damage of his own. Usually an excellent hook for me, though I did feel early on that Ryan may have come across a bit TOO much of a broody, damaged jerk. Fast forward to the next morning and viola, Sam is introduced to her newest employee...Ryan. They had a fantastic night with amazing chemistry, but now the reality of their positions and the fact that they WILL in fact be seeing each other again has hit them in the face. Reason prevails and no matter what they thought they felt, it’ll never work… We had an explosive start to their physical relationship, tempered by the slow burn of the emotional one as they muddle through their lives and their blossoming relationship. At this point, I felt that the pacing could have moved along a little more quickly. Continued miscommunications and both Sam and Ryan being insecure and wounded has them hesitating and second-guessing over and over… Around the ¾ mark, things picked up well. We learn more about Ryan’s past and start to see him in a new light. It took awhile though, there was a lot of emphasis on his damage that lasted much farther into the storyline that I would have expected. While I appreciated the gender-swap on the roles here, I’m sad to say that I just didn’t relate to Sam. I expected more from her as the company CEO – strength, independence, fierceness, self-worth – what have you – that I just wasn’t getting during my read. I wasn’t as invested in her HEA as I wanted to be, which was a hurdle for me. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC copy of this book, for which I’m voluntarily providing an honest review. My general rating rationale: 3 – Perfectly fine story, perhaps some minor editorial errors. Entertaining. Always finish. Typically with this rating I feel like there could have been MORE – be it believably/relatability, character development, internal dialogue, explanations or depth, richness to the overall storyline, etc. May lose a bit of engagement here and there but never consider the DNF. 4 – A very good book. Highly engaging, well developed characters, a great plot, relatable characters, keeps you invested to the last page. Would recommend to reader friends. 5 – Can’t say enough amazing things, loved the H and h, fabulously detailed plot, quick hook, intense investment in both story and characters (often extended to supporting characters as well) throughout the book. Will tell anyone who will listen that they should read it.

  • nice twist on the office romance

"The New Guy" was an enjoyable read with likable characters and a nice twist on the office romance trope (in this version she is the boss). I mostly liked the Hero, but sometimes he was too insecure and some of the humor made me cringe a bit. I really liked the female character, her flaws and attributed seemed more well balanced. All things considered, I enjoyed this book and would definitely read another book by this author.

  • Such a fun quick read

This book is a breath of fresh in the Romance world!! I've been reading for 35+ years and I've yet to read a romance book where the main couple isn't incredibly beautiful, smart, stereotypically perfect, and either broken beyond belief or alpha in all ways. I've read the cute attempts to make one or the other seem broken but beautiful and fixable if only they had the right person or overly confident and a player but they do a 180 when they finally meet HER...but Freeman had a totally new approach. She wrote about a NORMAL couple who are decent looking but by no means perfect. Ryan is relatively handsome by normal standards, smart, and totally socially awkward/brutally honest not because he's a loner weirdo but because he's just normal. He has a broad range of feelings, he doubts himself in some areas and is proud of others, he has trouble making friends like the majority of adults, he doesn't always say the suave correct thing but he's quick to apologize and make it right...Sam is not a size 4 with bouncy hair and perfect poise. She is striving for better but aware that she isn't the only one pushing her company forward, she is stubborn but willing to admit she's wrong, she is a real human and not a typical romance novel seductress. I thought the storyline was fun, flirty, and an easy read. I did feel like the back and forth went a little long between the major conflict and the resolution but that's just preference and not a hit against Freeman or the book. I'd definitely recommend the book and will be looking into Ms. Freeman and any other books she has out! I recieved a complimentary copy of this ARC through Netgalley but the review is 100% mine.
