  • Intrigue and magic.

Sonea, the girl from the slums who was accepted to the Magicians’ Guild because of her unexpected magic, is now in the thick of things. A dark secret plagues the city of Imardin and the Magicians’ Guild, yet few are wise as to its existence. I like Dannyl’s views of the Allied Lands he visits – it gives a new perspective on Sonea’s classmates. Yet, with the title of the book being “The Novice” one would expect to be in Sonea’s point of view more often. Rothen and Lorlen’s perspectives aren’t all that necessary to drive the story forward – though some might like the detail it adds. Watching Sonea struggle with not only her studies but also her social life is like returning to Hogwarts with the Mean Girls – lots of fun, excitement and intrigue. The world building is excellent and the story truly captures the imagination. My favourite part of the book is when Sonea realises how powerful she truly is – mentally, emotionally and magically. The ending truly captures all the intrigue Sonea truly finds herself in. Well worth a read.
