  • Great read - I powered through it in one weekend

I picked this up because I remembered the 1970s film fondly from seeing it as a teenager, although I'd never read Forsyth before. Despite being set in the 1960s, it doesn't feel dated. It's gripping and fast-paced once it gets started. It's fact-based but stretches the truth a fair bit in pursuit of the plot, and the links to real-life events enhance rather than detract from the overall enjoyment. It's also a fascinating look at life in post-war Germany, as a nation comes to terms with itself. I particularly liked that the main character didn’t suddenly turn into a super-spy, like other thrillers where an everyman is thrust into life-and-death situations. He continues to make amateur mistakes which increase his own jeopardy, often without his knowledge, so the reader knows the stakes have been raised, while he remains unaware. This adds to the tension believably. I didn’t really expect to like this one as much as I did, but it was a real page-turner.

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • The Odessa File

Excellent book. Based very closely on history and Forsyth's usual attention to detail.
