    The Painted Girls

I really like this kind of writing where a journalist turned fiction writer is inspired by a true story or event 'fleshes out' the facts by creating 3D characters we get to care about. This one has been inspired the Degas' Little Dancer statuette and weaves factual information and her own speculations about everyone's motives into a fascinating recreation of late 19th century Paris and the world of the Paris Opera seen through the eyes of two sisters. Their struggles to lift themselves out of appalling poverty and emotional deprivation and the perils and pitfalls to which they and their little sister are exposed to make this a real page turner. I highly recommend it for both its impressive (but subtly done) research and its entertainment value.

    Cleverly told and compelling story

This is the story of a poor family living in poverty in Paris in the late 19th century, and their struggle for survival, both practical and spiritual. The story is told alternately from the perspectives of two of the sisters in the family, one of whom becomes a famous artist's model. It is powerful, thought provoking and ultimately life affirming.
