Excellent as all her work is. Felt that I was in the period with every word I read.

  • Sedate at first, then grips

The first half of the book is quite sedate, although it does a tremendous job of setting the scene, creating a very real sense of time (post-WWI) and place (Camberwell, London). Around halfway through there’s a major change, and the book becomes much more tense and gripping - this, by the way, is exactly what I found with the other book I’ve read by this author, The Little Stranger. Over all I’d recommend this, it’s very well written. But if you think the pace is a little slack to begin with, keep with it as it really does reward.

An absorbing book about a forbidden love and the terrible consequences ensuing from its secrecy, full of period detail and insightful writing.
