    Hmm

A bit rushed at the end, and messy in the middle. The twist could have been cleverer and more subtly introduced.

    Thumbs up.

Well-knit, evenly paced, consistantly engrossing and extraordinary. May be one of his best.

    Excellent by Definition

I had no idea how high concept Banks could be. There's so much stuff at work in the background. The greatest joy for me was sensing how vast his knowledge had to be at the time, speculating about technology then that exists now. And who knows about the future? Then the story itself. A tale of Human adventure throughout the starts intercrossed with how philosophical games can be, as representations of reality. There's so many concepts going on, and working with each other, this is the first book that too me still feels very much alive, even after the story has finished. Excellent happens when all parts are essential. Not only there's no fat, all the muscle excites the imagination.
