  • An outstanding fantasy novel

The Priory of the Orange Tree is an amazing fantasy novel for what it can acomplish in a single book. It's rare for high fantasy to be able to complete a story in one single book, but Samantha Shannon has acomplished that with this one. The book features rich worldbuilding, interesting characters and different takes on what one would think of traditional fantasy. I'll point out how in this world women and men are hold to the same standards, both can be knights, warriors or caretakers. The story acompanies several characters, spread appart on this world. These characters have different world views, which disagree with one another. Causing for interesting conflict between characters. The pacing of the story is a bit all over the place, having several chapters that seem to drag themselves out. But all that was forgiven once I arrived to the last 400 pages, that were incredibly well paced and had me at the edge of the couch as I wanted to know how this epic story would conclude. So overall, i recomend this book to all who love fantasy, court intrigue, secret societies and dragons, good or bad. And for those who wonder if it is possible to tell a high fantasy story in just one book.

  • Great build up

For a stand alone fantasy the author did great in building a whole world and bringing the characters to life in just one book. I thoroughly enjoyed it but just felt like the end was a tiny bit rushed. Good read though. Would recommend.

  • Good idea and start, poor ending

Started very well and a good read, but this is not in the same class as Game of Thrones. You can not look to wrap a book up in a couple of chapters and have everyone lives happily ever after. Readers are a little bit more demanding It felt like the author lost interest part way through the book

  • Good but not great

Excellent world-building, interesting characters and very imaginative plotting, but the dialogue was at times stilted and unconvincing, and without giving too much away, the ending is too neat. But it was worth the read.

  • Wide-ranging, engrossing, great fantasy story telling

A great read. Many things are happening and strands interleaved. Good character development. A few important things in the plot could have been developed more, but impressive work.
