  • Burma railway

Beautifully written with a simple poetic style. The narrative structure is easy to follow and if you've seen the movie it is all tied in. It is a story of torture and forgiveness.

  • The Railway Man

There is always two sides to a story and here we get an opportunity to begin to understand the power of coercion by leaders who force underlings to treat people so inhumanely. Do as you are told or be killed. It is always a wonder of humanity that man can survive against enormous odds.

  • Loved Lomax's style. His matter-of-fact reflection and opinion on his dramatic life never fails to make you want to turn the page. Well written and a fascinating insight into events in a period of history I previously knew little about. I even enjoyed the start of the book describing his love of railway life, which set the scene very well. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this novel and look forward to watching the newly released film - Colin firth seems the ideal man to play the part of Lomax!

  • Review of The Railway Man.

This is a remarkable narrative of a man who not only loved trains but showed the reader how it really was during those days of war - what happened to those men whose lives were treated as though they had no value, but who were of greatest value in their sacrifice.
